TEXAS PTA MISSION

Texas PTA’s Mission is “to make every child’s potential a reality by engaging and empowering families and communities to advocate for all children.”

WESTSIDE PTA LEGISLATIVE ACTION COMMITTEE MISSION

The Westside PTA Legislative Action Committee’s goal is to empower parents to advocate for their children.

Priorities of the Westside PTA Legislative Action Committee:

·         Communicate to Westside parents about legislative information that affects their children.

·         Help parents communicate to representatives (tips for emailing representatives)

·         Develop activities to help students gain a basic understanding about US government like Constitution Day and Student Mock Elections.

·         Work to build positive relationships with the LISD school board and state legislators.

·         Enlist support of community resources as needed.

WE NEED YOUR HELP! PLEASE CONSIDER HELPING WITH ONE OR MORE OF OUR ACTIVITIES!

·         Attend Leander ISD Board Meetings. On the local level, committee members join a rotational schedule that’s objective is to attend all LISD school board meetings and help stay abreast of important issues in our school district.

·         Attend the LISD School Board Candidate Forum. Before LISD school board elections each year, Westside's LAC joins forces with area LACs to host a Candidate Forum to help parents make an informed decision on who represents them at the school district level.

·         Meet with Texas Legislators. Living in the state capitol affords us the luxury of visiting with state legislators. Every two years, in keeping with the Texas Legislators Session, we facilitate parent meetings with our legislators to inform them of issues most important to us and our students, including budget cuts and the public school finance system. Our legislators want to hear from parents just like you!

·         Coordinate with LISD Administrators. Committee members, in conjunction with the Vandegrift PTA Ladder, also coordinate with LISD administrators to provide community information meetings to keep parents informed about changes in legislation that will affect schools and students.

·         Participate in Student-Focused LAC Activities. We would love for our students to know more about the legislative process and learn how to be good citizens too! Committee Members will conduct a Student Mock Election this year for students.  Volunteers are always needed!
